1. Post a comment. Anywhere on Waxpixel. Just prove that you are smart enough to figure it out.
2. Finish your font selfportraits.
3. Visit the new downtown library and comment here on three things that you observe that are good design, and three things that are poorly designed. Remember that design goes beyond just the external appearance of something and focus on the functionality and the experiences that you encounter.
Be creative.

1. The Children's section - the way it's set up and the shelving is low so small children can reach books
the see-through floor with the colored lights
2. The overall "industrial" look with the concrete and pipes exposed
3. The Window of Donors at the main enterance...look just right and it appears the names are just floating
4. the Exit signs - don't really know why but I like the transparency look with the glowing letters.
5. The computer table where you look up titles, books... Simple design...minimalistic.
Dislikes
1. THE SHELVING! ---TOO INDUSTRIAL - I didn't like the way they appeared to be taken out of an abandoned warehouse and set in the building - they could have done a better job with wood...would have warmed up the place a little.
2. I never was a fan of the overall "airplane design" the signs look as if they are talking about a new airport.
3. The acid/kiwi green color on the walls....never have been a fan of the "trendy" colors on walls....a simple basic color then they can accent with the green color....
Overall will I use the library? Maybe...
will I make it a priority to go there again...Maybe not!
One more thing that I did like....the view out the windows of the "new" downtown gateway....NICE!
From a distance it looks like a big, pink windowless box, then when you get up closer you see it has sort of windows. Still pink
The "Splash" area inside the north door is very promotional.
Loved...
1. The book shelves in the bathroom. Simple metal shelves that allow you to set your books on a clean shelf while taking care of business. It's good to know your book wasn't sitting on the floor when the last person checked it out.
2. Wireless Internet. It has great space and lots of sitting. If I had a laptop with more than 20 minutes of battery life, I could really enjoy doing some quiet work there.
3. Self Checkout. No more uncomfortable feeling when people see me checking out gansta rap, contemporary Christian rock and classical CDs all at the same time.
Hated.
1. While the children’s area was nice. The view out the glass walls is a biker bar and the porn shop. I wish it was on a different corner.
2. Many of the seats are placed near the windows facing out. At this close distance, the windows are hard to see out of and all you see is the mesh.
3. The hours. The neon signs outside make it easy to tell what the hours are. But closing at 7pm is too early.
three good things
order online and pick up
brown chairs are comfortable but not too comfortable
Teen center computers can have two or more people to work on things together
three bad things
the metal bookshelves
no skywalk to it for when it is colder out
parking on the street is limited close by.

1) Without a doubt, the exterior. I don't know what that gold material is but it's cool for sure. Very unique.
2) The computers. We lived in caves a long time ago last I checked and it's nice to see that the new library knows computers pretty much control everything in the world now. With wireless internet and about a million computers available, people can go there and get their porn looked at...I mean get their work done quickly and comfortably!!!
3) The layout. Almost every building downtown is tall and skinny and it's nice to see the architects went the oppostie direction; short and wide. It really make the library stand out in my opion. But, with that said...
Dislikes:
1) I keep thinking I'm seeing a goofy-ass new logo for the Des Moines International Airport, turns out it's the layout of the new library. I'm not opposed to the construction of the building, as I've said already, I like it, but the print material that was designed for the new library makes me think airplane, and really nothing else, even if I know what it's for now.
2) Self-check out. I'm in a minority here, universally I think, not just for the library. I want to interact with people, not Rosie, the maid from the Jetsons. This trend toward phasing out people and installing machines bothers me on so many levels I don't want to even get started. So Bonker, check out your gangster rap, Christian music, porn, and the latest Disney films with a breathing human being and know in your mind you could care less what they think!!!
3) Selection. Perhaps this is a minor complaint because the library is brand new but their selection I thought was fairly poor. New titles of books and movies might be stocked on shelves as I type this, delayed because the trucking industry has to space out their shipments because of sky-rocketing, asinine gas prices, but I would think you'd want the shiny new shelves full of books and movies when you open, letting the new occupants know you have everything they want and need. I saw my reflection in a lot of those empty shelves instead.
highlights:
• the sideways "U" chairs. very nice...would totally steal one if i could. i know people who did this in college.
• close to starbucks...this is so far i see the best thing going for it
• i see it as a possibilty to not be forced to sit near random strangers
lowlights:
• whole place has a rather freezer feeling...not cozy at all...like going to a doctor's office
• i don't like the see through shelves...it makes it too vast. you can't focus on one book
• the cafĂ© is just as cold as the library
Super color scheme, I like it! Keep up the good work. Thanks for sharing this wonderful site with us.
